The most beautiful birds in the USA
Some of the most beautiful birds in the USA are among the Passeriformes. These are the perching birds, which include, for example, warblers, tanagers, orioles, thrushes, buntings, and flycatchers. There are also many non-perching birds which can be considered beautiful. Such birds include the hummingbirds, woodpeckers, swallows, waterfowl, and raptors.
Warblers
There are 53 species of warbler found at some time or other, in the United States. Many of these birds are migratory and annually move between Canada, the United States, and Mexico, Central and South America. The birds are more easily identified during spring migration when the breeding plumage is evident among the males. This is because fall plumage is drab and many of the warblers resemble each other during this time.
While all warblers are beautiful, a few really stand out. The Prothonotary Warbler has the brightest lemon-yellow plumage of almost any bird. These birds can be found in trees and bushes near rivers and swamps, and in bottomland hardwoods. It is common to hear and see them in the bayous of Louisiana.
Another pretty yellow bird, is the Yellow Warbler, which has overall yellow plumage with rust-colored streaks on the chest. Most birders would agree that the Blackburnian Warbler is gorgeous. In breeding plumage, the bird is striking with its bright colors and attractive markings. The bird has orange on the face and chest, black markings on the face and head, and black and white on the rest of the body. The orange chest is very bright making the bird stand out against the foliage.
Magnolia Warblers also have striking markings and colors. They have yellow underparts streaked with black, black, gray and white on the face and head, and gray and black on the wings and tail.
The Black and White Warbler is a handsome bird with clear black and white markings all over the body. These birds are quite unusual because they creep along branches, moving up and down tree trunks, searching for insects.
Tanagers
Tanagers are migratory songbirds that occur in the United States during spring and summer. These species are brightly-colored birds. There are four species recorded in the United States, Summer Tanager, Scarlet Tanager, Western Tanager, and Hepatic Tanager.
The brightest red of these birds is the Scarlet Tanager. It can be distinguished from the Summer Tanager, by its black wings. It is only the males of these species that have the bright coloring. The females have drab coloring. Summar Tanagers tend to be more commonly seen in Texas during migration.
Orioles
The orioles are a group of birds that are yellow or orange with black markings. Species include the Baltimore Oriole, Scott’s Oriole, and Orchard Oriole. Orioles are stunning birds, which like fruit bushes like mulberries. You will often hear them singing and calling as they move through the vegetation.

Buntings
Buntings are much smaller than oriole and tanagers, but no less beautiful. The male Indigo Buntings are a bright metallic blue color and female is a solid brown color. The most aptly named of the buntings of North America has to be the Painted Bunting.
The male of the species looks like he has been painted brilliant red, green, and blue. The head is blue, wings are lime green, and body is red. The males are very pretty but, surprisingly hard to see. They tend to perch at the top of a tree, behind a leaf, and sing. Female Painted Buntings are delightful in their own right, being a solid olive green.

Thrushes and Bluebirds
This group of birds are known for their songs and behavior; some of these birds are commonly found on the ground. The thrushes often have beautiful markings set against their brown or white feathering. The Wood Thrush is one of the most aesthetically-pleasing of the thrushes. These birds have white underparts with black spots, and brown upperparts.
The genus Sialis, are the bluebirds. These are also species of the thrush family but they are quite distinctive and beautiful. There are three species of bluebird in the United States,
- the Western,
- the Eastern, and
- the Mountain Bluebird
The Western Bluebird is found on the western side of the country and is a bright blue with rusty-orange underparts. The Eastern Bluebird looks similar but the orange does not extend onto the back and wings at all. The wings of the Eastern Bluebird are solid blue.
Hummingbirds
All the hummingbirds are beautiful little birds. They have bright metallic coloring on their throats, heads and backs. The males have the bright coloring on the throat, while females have white or buffy throats. The Ruby-throated Hummingbird is the most common species in the United States, and has a metallic green back and head, with (in the males) a red throat.
Flycatchers
You can see flycatchers in the United States, and of these, the Scissortailed Flycatcher is the most gorgeous. The bird also often perches prominently on telephone lines, giving you a good view of its features. It has salmon markings on the flanks, an overall light gray coloring with black wings and a long tail.
Waterfowl
Ducks, geese, and swans are all waterfowl. All these birds are attractive in their own ways, but one of the most striking is the Wood Duck. The male Wood Duck has iridescent coloring, green and chestnut, along with markings on the face, chest, and wings. The female is drabber in color but also a beautiful bird.

Raptors
Raptors are the birds of prey that include the owls, hawks, falcons, kestrels, and eagles, and vultures. Although these birds may not be thought of by everyone as beautiful, they certainly have details on their plumage, and behavior which can make them interesting to watch.
The Bald Eagle is ranked by many as the most majestic of the birds of prey, particularly since they are the national bird. What many people do not realize is that Bald Eagles take a couple of years to develop the adult colors, the white head and brown body.
Among the smaller raptors, the American Kestrel is one of the most beautiful. The male of this bird has bluish-gray wings, a rusty-colored back and distinct markings on the head and face and undersides. The female does not have the bluish-gray wings of the male, but instead has rusty-colored wings.
Conclusion
The United States has many beautiful species of birds, both passerines and non-passerines. Some of these birds are migratory, only being found in the country during certain months of the year. A big part of the appeal of bird watching is seeing these attractive birds and listening to their songs.
